What is the Magellan Program?
The MCSS Magellan Program provides opportunities for academic excellence beyond mainstream classes. Students should have demonstrated above average ability and the willingness to work effectively and productively with a minimum of teacher direction.
How is the Magellan Program special?
Students in the Magellan Program are grouped with others of similar ability and commitment. The work ethos expected of those students permits teachers to progress studies more quickly and offer a greater range of learning experiences
The Magellan program offers students in years 7-10 the chance to work in classes which are structured for highly motivated and talented students with above average ability, who are able and willing to work in an academically challenged environment. Students in the Magellan Program are placed in ability-streamed classes in Language & Literature (English), Mathematics, Sciences and Individuals & Societies (SOSE). Teachers of Magellan classes can challenge students with work in greater depth, and with enrichment or extension activities.
Magellan aims to challenge students through:
- Magellan Primary Program
- Enrichment opportunities in the academic curriculum
- Independent learning and inquiry
- Leadership opportunities
